Faecal Immunochemical Test
Bowel cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst men and women with more than 2000 new cases diagnosed each year. It is also the second most common cause of cancer death in Ireland.
Bowel cancer can cause bleeding in the digestive tract that can be invisible to the naked eye.
In order to detect if there is any bleeding a stool test called a 'Faecal Immunochemical Test' can be done with results back within a week. This is a simple non invasive test which has been found to be very accurate. If a positive test if found then your doctor will discuss the next step with you which may often be a colonoscopy (a camera test of the lower digestive tract).
